Volunteer & Employment Opportunities

Volunteer and employment opportunities to work with Cornell Upward Bound are available to Cornell students and community members.

Volunteering

Upward Bound volunteers are an integral component to the educational and enrichment services we offer our students. Volunteer opportunities for facilitating tutoring opportunities, driving vans, facilitating Saturday Academy programs, etc. are open throughout the academic year.

Work Study

Our work-study students create the foundation of our program facilitation through the Public Service Center’s Community Work Study program. From providing weekly tutoring support, coordinating office synergies, tracking our students for reporting purposes to researching grant opportunities, work-study students have the opportunity to truly experience the logistics and inner workings of a non-profit organization.

If you are a Cornell student with federal work-study available, you could qualify for paid employment opportunities with Upward Bound.

Employment

Annually, Upward Bound hosts a six-week summer program designed to provide students with the total educational experience including social, cultural, academic, and intellectually developmental activities.

Teaching Staff
For each six-week session, Upward Bound employs New York State certified teachers as visiting lecturers to the Cornell campus to help facilitate and teach academically rigorous classes for our rising juniors and seniors. Specific course offerings can change from summer to summer, but include instruction in 4 core subjects: Math, Laboratory Science, English/Language Arts & Foreign Language.

Tutor Counselors
Our Summer Tutor Counselors provide personal, academic and developmental support to our participating students throughout the entire summer session. Each summer we seek to hire motivated college students invested in making a difference in the lives of our Upward Bound scholars. Applicants for the Tutor Counselor position must have completed their sophomore year of college and have had a valid driver’s license for at least 3 years. Email upwardbound@cornell.edu for the job description and application information.

Night Counselor
During the Residential portion of our program, including the Rising Sophomore Preview Weekend, Upward Bound employs one Night Counselor to provide overnight, awake supervision from 10:30 pm to 6:30 am. Applicants must possess the ability to stay awake through the entire shift, and be comfortable addressing any issues that arise.
